Convert HEIC to PNG: what to know
Most HEIC photos are better served by JPG, but PNG is the right choice when the image is a screenshot, a scanned document, a graphic with transparency, or a master copy you will edit again and do not want to degrade. This page converts HEIC to PNG losslessly, on your device.
When PNG beats JPG for a HEIC file
Screenshots and text: JPG smudges sharp edges around letters and interface lines; PNG keeps them crisp. iPhone screenshots are saved as PNG already, but screenshots that were shared through Photos or Messages sometimes arrive as HEIC.
Transparency: HEIC can carry an alpha channel — stickers, cut-outs, some app exports. PNG keeps it; JPG would flatten it onto a background.
Editing masters: if you plan to crop, retouch and re-export several times, start from a lossless PNG so each generation does not lose detail.
What to expect from the file size
PNG stores every pixel exactly, so a 12-megapixel photo can become 20–40 MB as PNG. That is expected and not a fault. For photos you will simply share, choose JPG instead; for screenshots and graphics with large flat areas, PNG stays small because those compress well losslessly.
The converter runs the result through OxiPNG, a lossless optimiser, so the PNG is as small as a lossless PNG of that picture can reasonably be. If you need it smaller, send it to the compressor and choose the Smaller PNG (256-colour) mode.

Questions about HEIC to PNG
- Does PNG keep the HEIC's transparency?
- Yes. Keep transparency is on by default; untick it to flatten onto a colour.
- Why is my PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
- PNG is lossless. Photos have few repeated pixels, so they compress poorly losslessly. Use JPG for ordinary photos.
- Can I make the PNG smaller without losing quality?
- The output is already optimised losslessly. Any further reduction needs the compressor's reduced-colour PNG mode, which is lossy.
