How to rotate a PDF and save it the right way up (scans, duplex, single pages)
A PDF that opens sideways is one of the most common document annoyances: a landscape contract scanned in portrait, a phone scan that guessed the wrong orientation, a duplex batch whose backs came out upside down. Rotating in a viewer looks like a fix, but it usually lasts only until the file is closed. This guide explains what actually decides a page’s orientation, how to write the correct orientation into the file so it opens the right way up everywhere, and which of Toolkitta’s two PDF tools fits each case. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
Why the viewer’s rotate button does not stick
Every page in a PDF carries a rotation entry of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Viewers and printers read it and turn the page accordingly. The rotate command in most viewers — the browser’s built-in one, Preview’s View menu, the free Acrobat Reader — changes the display only. Close the file and reopen it and the page is sideways again, and anyone you send it to sees the original orientation. Some applications do offer a permanent rotate, but only when the file is saved afterwards, and often only in the paid edition.
Changing the file is different: the rotation entry on each page is updated and the PDF is saved, so every viewer, phone and printer turns the page the same way. That is what “rotate and save permanently” means, and it is what Rotate PDF does.
Rotation is lossless
Because only the rotation entry changes, the content of the page is untouched. Text stays selectable and searchable, scans stay exactly as sharp as they were, vector drawings keep their precision, and the page size is unchanged. Nothing is re-rendered or re-encoded, so a 40-page scan rotates in a second or two and the result is as good as the original.
This also means rotation cannot straighten a crooked page. A scan that is tilted by two degrees needs deskewing, which re-renders the page as an image at a chosen resolution — a different operation with a real quality cost. Rotation works in 90-degree steps and keeps everything else.
Fixing a whole document that was scanned sideways
- Open Rotate PDF and add the file, or several files at once. Each row shows a preview of the first page, already turned 90° clockwise, which is the most common fix for a landscape document fed in portrait.
- If the preview is now the wrong way, use the arrows on the row: left for 90° counter-clockwise, right again for 180°. Rotate all left and Rotate all right turn every file in the queue together.
- Leave Pages to rotate on All and click Rotate. Download the result, or send it on to Compress PDF, Merge PDF or PDF to Image.
The output is a new file named after the original with -rotated added; your original is not modified. Open the download and page through it before sharing — a document scanned in two batches can have a second batch that needed a different angle, which is where the next section helps.
Every second page upside down: odd and even pages
Duplex scanners read both sides of a sheet, and depending on how the paper was loaded the backs come out rotated 180 degrees while the fronts are fine. The same happens when a two-sided document is photographed page by page and the phone is turned between shots. Rotating everything would only move the problem to the other half of the pages.
Rotate PDF’s Pages to rotate option handles this directly. Choose Even, set the angle to 180° with the row arrows, and only pages 2, 4, 6 and so on are turned. Odd does the same for the fronts. The choice applies to every file in the queue, so a folder of duplex scans with the same fault is fixed in one run. If the wrong pages are irregular rather than alternating, use Custom and type their numbers, for example 3, 8-10.
Turning one page while looking at it
Sometimes only a single chart page in a report is landscape, or you want to see each page before deciding. What to check before you share
Open the rotated file in a different viewer than the one you used to check the original — a phone works well — and confirm every page faces the right way. Rotation is one of the few PDF operations with no quality trade-off, so if the pages look right, the job is done.
Encrypted or password-protected PDFs, XFA forms and digitally signed documents are refused with an explanation, because saving a rotated copy would break the encryption or invalidate the signature. Export an unencrypted, unsigned copy from your PDF application, rotate that, and keep the signed original where the signature still counts. Standard forms are fine: their fields stay editable after rotation.
