Make a ringtone: what to know
A ringtone is just a short piece of audio in the right format. Add a song or recording above, choose where the ringtone should start and press Ringtone: the trimmer keeps 30 seconds and saves an M4R file, the format iPhones use for ringtones. For Android, choose MP3 instead. Everything happens in your browser, so your music is not uploaded anywhere.

How to make a ringtone
Add one audio file: MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, Ogg or WebM, up to 50 MB and 15 minutes. Tap or drag on the waveform to find the part you want, then place the start handle where the ringtone should begin. Press Ringtone to select 30 seconds from there. Play selection to check it, add a short fade out under Fade edges if you like, then click Trim audio and download the file.
You can also drag both handles yourself. iPhone ringtones must be 40 seconds or shorter; if the selection is longer while M4R is chosen, a warning appears before you save.
Adding the ringtone to an iPhone
iPhones do not install ringtones straight from Safari or the Files app. Connect the iPhone to a computer and open Finder on a Mac, or iTunes or Apple Devices on Windows, then drag the .m4r file onto the iPhone in the sidebar. It then appears in Settings under Sounds & Haptics, then Ringtone.
Without a computer, the GarageBand app on the iPhone can import an audio file and share it as a ringtone.
Adding the ringtone to an Android phone
Android phones accept MP3 ringtones. Choose MP3 under Save as, download the file and open it from your phone's settings under Sound, then Ringtone, and pick it from your files. On some phones you may need to move it into the Ringtones folder first with a file manager app.

- How long can a ringtone be?
- iPhone ringtones must be 40 seconds or shorter; 30 seconds is the usual length. Android has no strict limit, but the ringtone restarts when it ends.
- What is an M4R file?
- M4R is AAC audio in an MPEG-4 file with the .m4r extension, the format iPhones use for ringtones. It is the same kind of file as M4A with a different name.
- Can I use any song?
- Use music you own or have the right to use. Streaming-app downloads are protected and cannot be added here.
- Is my music uploaded?
- No. The trimmer runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
