How it works

How to make an image grayscale

  1. Add up to 20 images — JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, GIF, BMP, SVG, ICO or TIFF. They stay in your browser.
  2. Choose Shades of gray for photos, or Black & white for two colours only. In Black & white mode, adjust Threshold: higher makes more pixels black.
  3. Add Resize, Format or Compress if needed. Convert, compare the result with the original, then download each image or a ZIP.

What is the difference between grayscale and black and white?

Shades of gray keeps smooth tones between black and white, which works well for photos. Black & white uses only those two colours, which can help with simple drawings or high-contrast scans. It can lose faint details; compare the result before saving.

What does the threshold do?

A pixel darker than the threshold becomes black; the rest becomes white. Start at 128, then raise it for more black or lower it for more white. The threshold is only used in Black & white mode. Save as PNG or lossless WebP for exactly two colours; JPG compression can add gray pixels near edges.

Does it keep transparency?

Yes, the conversion keeps transparent and partly transparent pixels. PNG and WebP preserve them by default. JPG fills transparent areas with white; add Format to choose the background colour.

Can I convert several images at once?

Yes. Add up to 20 files, with 20 MB per file and 100 MB total. The same mode and threshold apply to every image. Downloads get a -grayscale suffix so they are easy to tell apart from the originals.

Can I use this in a workflow?

Yes. Add Grayscale Image to an image workflow, choose the mode, then Preview or Run. You can chain it with Crop, Resize, Compress, Image to PDF or other compatible steps and save the workflow settings for later.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Conversion and comparison happen in your browser. Keep the tab open until you download your images; reloading clears the batch. Website hosting and performance measurement are described in our Privacy notice.
