How it works

How to remove EXIF and GPS data from a photo

  1. Add up to 20 images — JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, GIF, BMP, SVG, ICO or TIFF. Each card shows what it carries, such as Location, Camera or Date taken; open the tags to see the values.
  2. Press Remove metadata. JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF files are rewritten without their metadata, so the picture itself is not touched. Keep or drop the colour profile.
  3. Download each image or a ZIP. Add Resize, Format or Compress if you also need a smaller file; those save the picture again from pixels.

What is photo metadata, and why remove it?

Phones and cameras save details beside the picture: GPS coordinates, the date and time, the phone or camera model, often its serial number, and the app that edited it. Anyone who gets the original file can read them. Removing them before you post, sell something online or send a photo to a stranger keeps your home address and routine private.

Does removing metadata reduce quality?

No for JPG, PNG, WebP and GIF: the file is rewritten block by block and the compressed picture data is copied unchanged, so every pixel stays the same and animations keep playing. HEIC, AVIF, TIFF, BMP and other formats cannot be rewritten in the browser, so they are saved again as JPG (quality 90) or PNG, which also carries nothing over.

Will my photo turn sideways?

No. Phones often store photos sideways with a tag that tells apps how to turn them. That one tag is written back on its own, with no other details, so the photo shows upright everywhere.

What is the colour profile, and should I keep it?

It tells apps which colour space the picture uses, such as Display P3 on recent iPhones. Keeping it, the default, makes colours look exactly as before. It does not contain your location, the time or your device's serial number. Turn it off for the smallest possible file.

Does a social network remove metadata anyway?

Many large networks strip location from what other people download, but not every site does, and messaging apps that send files as documents, email, cloud links and marketplaces often keep the original. Cleaning the file yourself means you do not have to rely on the site.

Can I use this in a workflow?

Yes. Add Remove Image Metadata to an image workflow or a step-by-step workflow, before or after other steps, and save the workflow for later. Steps that save the picture again from pixels, such as Resize or Compress, also leave no metadata.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Reading and removing metadata happen in your browser; the photos are never sent to Toolkitta. Keep the tab open until you download your images. Website hosting and performance measurement are described in our Privacy notice.
