Sign PDF

Draw, type or upload your signature and place it on any page, with a date, initials or text — privately in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and your signature is not stored.

No files uploaded to a server

Use the focused tool, then carry originals and current settings into the editor.

About Batch and Interactive Editor

How to use Interactive Editor

  1. Choose Interactive Editor to open originals, or use Edit in editor to carry your current settings across.
  2. Edit supported text and images, add content, fill forms, place signatures or arrange pages. Undo and Redo let you try changes.
  3. Use Export to save a PDF, or save a project to keep the document editable.

Each mode retains its own session until reload. Batch keeps its settings and results when you switch modes. Nothing is saved automatically.

Some PDF content cannot be separated into editable objects. Those pages keep their original appearance as a page background; you can add content over them.

How it works

How to sign a PDF

  1. Add the PDF. The first page appears; use the page strip, Previous, Next or the page number to reach the signature line.
  2. Click Create a signature: draw it with your mouse or finger, type your name in a handwriting style, or upload a photo of your signature (the paper background is removed). Then Place it and drag it onto the line, or use Sign here for an empty signature box. Pull the corner to resize. Add a Date or Text the same way, and switch on Every page for initials.
  3. Click Sign PDF, check the preview, then download or send the result to Protect PDF to lock it with a password before emailing it.

Place a clearly fictional signature

Open the four-page practice report, stay on Cover and click Create a signature. Choose Type and enter Practice Name, then use Place to put it in the blank area below the cover text.

Resize it without covering the heading, leave Every page off and click Sign PDF. Preview all four pages: the mark should appear only on Cover, at the position and size you chose.

This adds a visible electronic mark, without a certificate or identity verification. It does not make the PDF tamper-proof; confirm what kind of signature the recipient accepts before signing a real document.

How signatures are made and placed, and what changes in the file

Draw records your strokes on a pad at your screen's resolution and trims the empty space around them, so the signature you place is only the ink. Type writes your name in one of three handwriting styles bundled with the site (Caveat, Dancing Script and Great Vibes, open-licensed) and turns it into a picture, so accented and non-Latin letters appear exactly as typed. Upload opens any picture the site supports; with Remove white background on, paper and light backgrounds become transparent and only the darker ink is kept, which is what a photographed signature needs. Turn it off for a stamp or logo that should keep its background.

Placing

Everything you place is positioned relative to the page as you see it, so it lands in the same spot in the result at any zoom, and a scanned page that is stored sideways still gets the signature where you put it. Pictures keep their proportions when resized; a date or text scales its letters with its width. Every page repeats the item at the same place on all pages — the usual way to initial a contract.

What changes in the file

Items are drawn into the pages in place, not copied into a new document, so text, pictures, links, bookmarks, annotations, editable form fields and document metadata stay as they are. Dates and text in Latin letters are written as real text in Helvetica; other scripts are drawn as a sharp picture. Empty signature fields in a form are left in place — put your signature over them. If the PDF has form fields, Lock form fields makes their answers read-only page content; someone with a PDF editor can still alter that content. Encrypted PDFs (remove the password with Unlock PDF first), XFA forms and documents that already carry a digital signature or certification are refused, because rewriting them would break the encryption or invalidate the existing signature.

Frequently asked questions

Useful details

9 answers
Is my document or my signature uploaded?

No. Opening, previewing, drawing and signing happen in your browser. The PDF, your drawn strokes, your typed name and any picture you choose are not sent to Toolkitta, and they are not written to storage on your device either: they live in this tab until you reload or close it. Website hosting and performance measurement are described in our Privacy notice.

How do I electronically sign a PDF?

Add the PDF, click Create a signature and draw, type or upload it, then place it on the signature line and click Sign PDF. That is an electronic signature (e-signature) made entirely in your browser; see below for how it differs from a certificate-based digital signature.

Is a signature made here legally valid?

Acceptance depends on the document, recipient and applicable requirements. This tool adds a visible electronic mark; it does not verify your identity, issue a certificate or certify legal validity. Ask the recipient which signing method they accept before using it for a real agreement.

What is the difference between an electronic and a digital signature?

An electronic signature is a mark you place on the page — drawn, typed or a picture. A digital signature is cryptographic: a certificate issued to you signs the file so a reader can verify who signed and that nothing changed since. This tool makes the first kind. It cannot create the second, because that needs a certificate and a signing key that identify you; it does not claim to.

Can I sign on my phone?

Yes. Draw with your finger on the pad, or type your name. Placed items can be dragged with a finger and resized from the corner. On small screens the page fills the width of the studio; use the page strip or page number field to jump to the right page.

Can I add initials, a date or other text?

Yes. Initials places a small copy of a signature; switch on Every page to repeat it on all pages. Date adds today's date in your device's format, editable. Text adds a short line — a name, place or title — up to 80 characters. Latin text is written as real text; other scripts are drawn as a sharp picture so they look exactly as typed.

How do several people sign the same document?

Sign your copy and pass the signed file on; the next person opens it here and adds their signature the same way. Each signing creates a new file, so keep the copy you sent. If someone in the chain applies a certificate-based digital signature, later signers will have to use the same kind of tool, because this one refuses documents that already carry one.

Can I protect the signed file?

Yes. Send the result to Protect PDF to add a password or block editing, or to Compress PDF to shrink a scanned contract before emailing it. Remember that a password protects the file; it does not turn the signature into a digital one.

Which files are refused, and what changes in the file?

Encrypted or password-protected PDFs (remove the password with Unlock PDF first), XFA forms and documents that already carry a digital signature or certification are refused with an explanation, because rewriting them would break the encryption or invalidate the existing signature. Empty signature fields are fine. Everything else is kept: items are drawn in place, so text, pictures, links, bookmarks, annotations, editable form fields and metadata remain, unless you switch on Lock form fields, which turns the answers into page content. This is not a redaction, metadata-removal or signature-removal tool.
