Does removing the sound change the picture?

No. The video data is copied as it is into a new MP4. Only when you add Resize or Compress is it re-encoded.

Can I keep the sound as a separate file?

Yes. Send the original video to Audio Converter to save its sound as MP3, M4A, WAV or FLAC.

Why is the result a little smaller?

The audio track took up part of the file. A silent video is smaller by roughly the size of its sound.
