Convert AVIF to PNG: what to know

AVIF is what many websites now serve, and it is what you often end up with after saving an image from a page. Plenty of software still cannot open it: older image editors, office suites, design tools, upload forms. PNG opens everywhere, keeps transparency and never loses quality when you edit and save it again. This page converts AVIF to PNG on your device.

Detailed guide

PNG or JPG?

Choose PNG when the image has transparency — a logo, an icon, a product cut-out — or when you are going to edit it further and want every later save to be lossless. Choose JPG for ordinary photos you only need to open or share: a photo saved as PNG is several times larger than the same photo as JPG and looks no different. Both are one click apart under Convert to.

What PNG can and cannot recover

AVIF from the web is almost always lossy. Converting to PNG keeps the decoded picture exactly, pixel for pixel, but it cannot restore detail the AVIF encoder already discarded. The PNG is therefore much larger than the AVIF — often ten times or more for a photo — without looking any sharper. That is expected; the gain is compatibility and lossless editing from here on.

Transparency is kept: AVIF and PNG both have an alpha channel, and Keep transparency is on by default. 10-bit and HDR AVIF files are decoded to standard 8-bit sRGB, with very bright highlights tone-mapped by the browser's decoder. Animated AVIF files contribute their first frame, and the row says so.

Steps

Add up to 20 AVIF files above; PNG is preselected and has no quality setting because it is lossless. Click Convert. The PNGs go through a lossless optimiser so they are as small as PNG allows. Download each file or the whole batch as a ZIP. If your browser cannot decode AVIF itself, the page loads a small decoder automatically; nothing is uploaded either way. Metadata such as camera settings and location is not copied into the PNG.

Questions about AVIF to PNG

Will the PNG keep the transparent background?
Yes. Keep transparency is on by default; untick it to fill transparent areas with a colour.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF is lossy and very efficient; PNG stores every pixel losslessly. Choose JPG if the image is a photo without transparency.
Does it work with animated AVIF?
The first frame is converted to a still PNG, and the result row says so.
How it works

How to convert an image to another format

  1. Add up to 20 images — JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, GIF, BMP, SVG, ICO or TIFF. They stay in your browser.
  2. Under Convert to, choose JPG for photos you will share anywhere, PNG for graphics with transparency, WebP or AVIF for the smallest files on the web. Add Rotate/Flip, Resize or Compress from the Also row to make those changes in the same pass.
  3. Click Convert, check the size on each picture, then Download one by one or as a ZIP — or send the results to another tool.
Frequently asked questions

Useful details

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion runs in your browser using built-in codecs; the files are never sent to Toolkitta. Keep the tab open until you download or send your results — reloading clears the batch. Website hosting and performance measurement are described in our Privacy notice.

Which formats can I convert from and to?

In: JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF (iPhone photos), AVIF, GIF, BMP, SVG, ICO and TIFF, up to 20 files, 20 MB each and 100 MB per batch, at most 40 megapixels. Out: JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF. Animated GIF, WebP and PNG keep their first frame only.

Why does my iPhone photo have no file type on Windows?

Some systems do not recognise HEIC and leave the type blank. The converter identifies files from their contents, so a .HEIC file with no type still opens; HEIC decoding is downloaded once (about 2 MB) the first time you add one.

What happens to transparency?

PNG, WebP and AVIF keep it by default; untick Keep transparency to flatten onto a background. JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick (white by default).

Is metadata (EXIF, location) kept?

No. Every converted file is rebuilt from pixels, so camera settings, GPS location and other embedded metadata are removed. Orientation is applied to the pixels first, so photos are not rotated. Keep your original if you need the metadata.

Which quality should I choose?

Without Compress, images are saved at a high quality (JPG 90, WebP 85, AVIF 60), which is hard to tell from the original. Add Compress to choose a lower quality for smaller files — 70–80 is usually indistinguishable for photos on the web — or a Target size such as 200 KB, in the same pass.

Is AVIF safe to use?

All current browsers and phones open AVIF and it produces the smallest files, but some older desktop software, email clients and upload forms reject it. Use WebP or JPG when you are not sure what will open the file.

How do I continue in another tool?

Use Send to beside a converted image, or Send all to for the batch, to open the compressor, cropper or Image to PDF tool with those results already loaded. Every session stays available until you reload the page.

Can I convert images to PDF here?

Not in this tool — PDF is a document, not an image format. Convert first if you need a specific format, then use Send to → Image to PDF, or open the Image to PDF tool directly to combine JPG, PNG, HEIC or WebP files into one PDF with page size and order controls.
