Convert PNG to AVIF: what to know

PNG is lossless and large. If a PNG is going on a website — a hero image, a screenshot, a product cut-out with a transparent background — AVIF stores the same picture in a small fraction of the space and keeps the transparency. This page converts up to 20 PNG files to AVIF on your device.

Detailed guide

How much smaller?

PNG has nothing to throw away, so the saving is dramatic for anything photographic or with gradients: in our test a 4.4 MB 1920 × 1920 gradient artwork became a 22 KB AVIF at the default quality of 60, and a 66 KB WebP. Flat graphics with large single-colour areas start small as PNG and save less. Each result row shows the before and after size.

AVIF is lossy here — when to keep PNG

This converter writes lossy AVIF. That is ideal for photos, renders and gradients, but text in UI screenshots, thin lines and pixel art can show faint softening around edges. For those, raise the quality with Compress, or choose lossless WebP under Convert to, which keeps every pixel exactly and is still smaller than PNG. Keep the original PNG as your master copy for further editing.

Transparency

AVIF has an alpha channel, and Keep transparency is on by default, so a cut-out stays a cut-out. Edges are encoded at full alpha quality so they do not fringe. Untick Keep transparency to flatten onto a background colour if the destination needs an opaque image.

Steps and compatibility

Add the PNG files, keep AVIF selected and click Convert. AVIF encoding is slower than PNG or WebP — a few seconds per large image on a laptop, longer on a phone — and the encoder (about 1 MB) is downloaded the first time. Download each file or a ZIP. Metadata is removed. Every current browser displays AVIF; some email clients, older desktop software and upload forms do not, so use AVIF for the web and keep PNG for everything else.

Questions about PNG to AVIF

Does AVIF keep transparency?
Yes. Keep transparency is on by default and the alpha channel is encoded at full quality.
Is PNG to AVIF lossless?
No, AVIF output here is lossy. For pixel-exact output smaller than PNG, choose lossless WebP.
Will my screenshot text stay sharp?
Usually at the default, but check small text. Raise the quality with Compress, or use lossless WebP for UI screenshots.
How it works

How to convert an image to another format

  1. Add up to 20 images — JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, AVIF, GIF, BMP, SVG, ICO or TIFF. They stay in your browser.
  2. Under Convert to, choose JPG for photos you will share anywhere, PNG for graphics with transparency, WebP or AVIF for the smallest files on the web. Add Rotate/Flip, Resize or Compress from the Also row to make those changes in the same pass.
  3. Click Convert, check the size on each picture, then Download one by one or as a ZIP — or send the results to another tool.
Frequently asked questions

Useful details

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion runs in your browser using built-in codecs; the files are never sent to Toolkitta. Keep the tab open until you download or send your results — reloading clears the batch. Website hosting and performance measurement are described in our Privacy notice.

Which formats can I convert from and to?

In: JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF (iPhone photos), AVIF, GIF, BMP, SVG, ICO and TIFF, up to 20 files, 20 MB each and 100 MB per batch, at most 40 megapixels. Out: JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF. Animated GIF, WebP and PNG keep their first frame only.

Why does my iPhone photo have no file type on Windows?

Some systems do not recognise HEIC and leave the type blank. The converter identifies files from their contents, so a .HEIC file with no type still opens; HEIC decoding is downloaded once (about 2 MB) the first time you add one.

What happens to transparency?

PNG, WebP and AVIF keep it by default; untick Keep transparency to flatten onto a background. JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick (white by default).

Is metadata (EXIF, location) kept?

No. Every converted file is rebuilt from pixels, so camera settings, GPS location and other embedded metadata are removed. Orientation is applied to the pixels first, so photos are not rotated. Keep your original if you need the metadata.

Which quality should I choose?

Without Compress, images are saved at a high quality (JPG 90, WebP 85, AVIF 60), which is hard to tell from the original. Add Compress to choose a lower quality for smaller files — 70–80 is usually indistinguishable for photos on the web — or a Target size such as 200 KB, in the same pass.

Is AVIF safe to use?

All current browsers and phones open AVIF and it produces the smallest files, but some older desktop software, email clients and upload forms reject it. Use WebP or JPG when you are not sure what will open the file.

How do I continue in another tool?

Use Send to beside a converted image, or Send all to for the batch, to open the compressor, cropper or Image to PDF tool with those results already loaded. Every session stays available until you reload the page.

Can I convert images to PDF here?

Not in this tool — PDF is a document, not an image format. Convert first if you need a specific format, then use Send to → Image to PDF, or open the Image to PDF tool directly to combine JPG, PNG, HEIC or WebP files into one PDF with page size and order controls.
